Головна - Світова геополітика - Incompatible positions of Russia and the United States in the Geneva talks

International think tanks and security experts are watching with alarming interest in a series of talks between Russia and the United States and NATO on resolving the crisis on Ukraine’s border.
The popular Swiss “Neue Zürcher Zeitung” published on January 11 this year. a short report on the course and results of the first round of talks between Russia and the United States, which took place yesterday in Geneva.
The publication notes that the long-awaited negotiations on the crisis in Ukraine have not led to any rapprochement.
US President Joe Biden told the US Undersecretary of State after an almost seven-hour meeting that Moscow’s demands were unacceptable. The United States does not want to be told who can join NATO and who cannot, and it is not ready to end its military cooperation with sovereign countries like Ukraine, given Russia.
One of the most unusual meetings in recent diplomatic history took place in Geneva on Monday. Formally, these were talks between two high-ranking diplomats from the United States and Russia, who had already held talks twice in Switzerland last year. But, in fact, it was about much more: Russia, grossly violating diplomatic norms, actually demanded capitulation from the United States and in December submitted to them for consideration and signing two draft treaties, the implementation of which would mean a radical reorganization of the previous security architecture in Europe .
Russia, in the traditional brutal manner and beyond the norms of diplomatic etiquette, demands that the United States “pack its things and withdraw from Eastern Europe.” It was with such undiplomatic statements that the head of the negotiating team from Russia arrived in Geneva.
During the current week, Russia will have a series of meetings within the long-frozen format of the NATO-Russia Council, as well as at the level of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Russia does not like such large forums, which involve Moscow-critical Eastern European states. She openly prefers direct talks with the United States at the level of heads of state.
The European Union’s Eastern Partnership project has failed. In view of this, the EU does not receive the support of two leading geopolitical forces in their attempts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
The EU has invested billions to bring Ukraine closer. But the results of these intentions are disappointing. In the current conflict, Russians and Americans are only agreeing on Ukraine’s fate.
The European Union does not want to be ignored, because the Americans and the Russians are negotiating with each other on the conflict in Ukraine and the future of European security. This is what EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said last week, after a three-day visit to Kyiv and a personal visit to the Donbass front line. After all, Ukraine is “part of Europe,” Borrel said. And without security in Ukraine there is no security in Europe.
On Wednesday, January 12, this year the second round of talks between Russia and NATO will take place in Brussels. Analysts predict that these talks are also doomed to failure. The President of the United States has already spoken about this, saying that the United States must be prepared for the fact that negotiations with Russia will end in vain. If Russia tries to freeze the talks and turn them into a lengthy process, the United States intends to impose new sanctions on Russia.
